The Most Popular Types of Welding

posted on December 3, 2016

Welding is one of the coolest (and hottest!) trades you can get into. It involves a fabrication process that joins two materials together using a melted base metal. This trade allows you to be both practical and creative while practicing your skills.

But, did you know there are many different types of welding? Following is a description of just several of them:

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (aka Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding) involves welding thick sections of stainless steel or non-ferrous metals together. It’s an arc-welding process that uses a tungsten electrode to produce the weld. This process is complex and time-consuming.

Gas Metal Arc Welding

Also known as Metal Inert Gas (MIG), this method uses a shielding gas along the wire electrode, heating up the two metals that are to be joined. A constant voltage and direct-current power source is required for this style of welding. It’s the most common industrial welding process.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding

A manual process of stick welding is used by the welder in this style. The stick utilizes an electric current to form an arc between the stick and the metals. It’s often used in the fabrication of steel structures, and to weld iron and steel.

Submerged Arc Welding

This welding method uses a consumable electrode, as well as a blanket of fusible flux. The flux blanket protects the weld and arc zone from contamination.

Flux-Cored Arc Welding

This style is similar to MIG welding, however, it uses a flux-filled wire. Depending on the filler, it may or may not be used with shielding gas.

As you can see, there are many different styles/methods of welding, making for a fascinating and exciting industry!
